Snapdragon 8 Elite: The World’s Fastest Mobile Chip Explained

Qualcomm is renowned for its networking chips, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite is no exception. It features the flagship X80 5G modem and FastConnect 7900, enhancing 5G and Wi-Fi 7 performance. The Snapdragon 8 Elite, Qualcomm’s latest flagship mobile chip, is now official. It boasts custom second-generation Oryon CPU cores with clock speeds up to 4.32 GHz, making it the most powerful mobile chip to date. Qualcomm has named it “Elite” to highlight its significant advancements in the industry. This chip introduces several groundbreaking features, including on-device multi-modal AI capabilities and enhanced CPU and GPU performance. The Snapdragon 8 Elite is manufactured using TSMC’s advanced 3nm process, the same technology used for Apple’s A18 Pro chip in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Simplified CPU and GPU Details

The Snapdragon 8 Elite includes an octa-core CPU with a hybrid architecture: two prime cores at 4.32 GHz and six performance cores at 3.53 GHz. Unlike its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which used ARM’s custom Cortex cores, all six CPU cores in the Snapdragon 8 Elite are based on Qualcomm’s custom second-generation Oryon architecture. These cores have access to over 24 MB of L2 cache, the highest in the industry for a mobile chip, and support up to 24 GB of LPDDR5x RAM. This configuration delivers a 50% performance improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, a significant leap given the already impressive speed of the previous chip. The new three-core Adreno GPU, clocked at 1.1 GHz, is 40% faster and 40% more power-efficient, with a 35% improvement in ray-tracing performance compared to the Adreno 740 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. It is also the first mobile GPU to support Unreal Engine 5 Nanite, enhancing gaming capabilities.

Snapdragon 8 Elite: On-Device AI Capabilities

Most smartphones today use edge-powered AI, where processing is split between the device and the cloud. The new Hexagon NPU (neural processing unit) in the Snapdragon 8 Elite is 45% faster and 45% more efficient per watt.

This NPU features an 8-core scalar accelerator and a 6-core vector accelerator, supporting large language models (LLM) and traditional AI tasks. It can handle voice input and generate text, images, and audio, enabling advanced on-device AI applications like AI Expansion, super-resolution, and segmentation, which enhance camera and image-editing performance.

The AI-powered Cognitive Image Sensing Processor (ISP) can process up to 4.3 gigapixels per second, support up to 320 MP resolution, and record 8K videos at 60fps.

Top-Tier Networking

Qualcomm’s networking chips are highly regarded, and the Snapdragon 8 Elite includes the flagship X80 5G modem and FastConnect 7900, boosting 5G and Wi-Fi 7 performance.

Benchmark Performance

The Snapdragon 8 Elite excels in benchmarks, scoring 3221 in single-core and 10236 in multi-core CPU tests on Geekbench. While its single-core score is slightly lower than the A18 Pro, it outperforms in multi-core tests due to its eight CPU cores compared to the A18 Pro’s six.On AnTuTu, the Snapdragon 8 Elite scores 3,014,075 points, significantly higher than the A18 Pro’s 1,700,000, showcasing superior GPU, memory, and user experience performance.
